10 Tips to Help Manage Eczema

Living with eczema is a challenge. Many things can trigger a flare-up of eczema, from scented soaps to dust mites. There is no cure for eczema, but, in most cases, it is manageable. Also, remember that for some, eczema can be a seasonal issue. You are fine in the summer and nothing but flare ups in the winter.

Here are some tips we have learned from our customers that may help you to manage it better.

  • Use warm, not hot, water for at least 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Avoid scrubbing your skin and use unscented soap, Vanicream Cleansing Bar, or soap substitute.
  • As soon as you are done bathing promptly apply moisturizer. This will help keep the skin hydrated
  • Avoid clothing that that is made from wool or 100% polyester. They can be rough, scratchy and can be hot. Skinnies line of viscose and silk therapeutic clothing is a great choice. The seamless design will not irritate your skin.
  • Use natural fabrics for your bedding including organic cotton and silk.
  • Do not use a corticosteroid product unless prescribed by your doctor.
  • Avoid stress, if you already have inflammation in your skin, as with eczema, stress will worsen your condition and cause a flare-up.
  • Use a humidifier in the winter to help the skin from drying out.
  • Do not get the humidity too high or it can increase dust mite allergens.
  • Reduce indoor allergens, particularly dust mites, and by washing bedding weekly in hot water, removing rugs, stuffed furniture, stuffed toys, and curtains when possible
  • Use a liquid laundry detergent that is unscented and mild.
  • Avoid fabric softeners.
  • Rinse clothing and bedding thoroughly after washing to remove any detergent residue.
  • When doing housework or yard work, wear latex or rubber gloves with a cotton liner. Avoid harsh household chemicals like bleach.
  • Don’t use cosmetics and if you do use them lightly
  • It's best to use water that has been treated with a water softener. Soft water more effectively removes bath soap from the skin, thoroughly removes soap/detergent from laundry, soft clothes.

Ok, so we had a few more than 10 tips. We add to this list as we talk to our customers that are living with eczema every day.
